I've spent more money on AI tools in the last eighteen months than I've spent on groceries. And I live in Alaska, where a gallon of milk costs about six bucks. So when I tell you I have opinions about which AI tools are worth paying for, understand that these opinions were purchased with real dollars and real frustration.

Every week there's a new AI product launch. Every week someone on Twitter tells me I absolutely must try the latest $40/month tool that will "10x my productivity." And every week I watch most of these tools fail to deliver anything I couldn't get for free with a little more effort.

So I built a tier list. Not based on benchmarks or press releases — based on what I actually use, what I actually pay for, and what actually moves the needle on real projects. I run two businesses, publish hundreds of technical articles, and build production software from a cabin in Alaska. This is what works.


How the Tiers Work

Let me explain my framework before I start ranking things.

Free Tier — Tools where the free version is genuinely useful for real work. Not "free trial" useful. Not "here's a taste, now pay us" useful. Actually, functionally useful for production tasks.

Premium Tier — Tools worth paying for if you have a specific use case. The key word is specific. If you're paying for a premium AI tool "just in case," you're wasting money.

Must-Pay Tier — Tools where the paid version pays for itself so fast that not paying is leaving money on the table. These are the ones where I'd be angry if someone took them away.

The monthly costs I list are as of early 2026. They'll probably change. Everything always changes.


Free Tier: What's Actually Usable Without Paying a Dime

Google Gemini (Free)

I'll be honest — I was skeptical of Gemini for a long time. Google's AI efforts felt scattered and half-baked through most of 2024. But the free tier of Gemini in 2026 is genuinely impressive for certain tasks.

Where it shines: research synthesis, summarizing long documents, and conversational brainstorming. If I need to understand a new technology domain quickly, Gemini's integration with Google's search index gives it an edge that other free tools can't match. I used it extensively when researching weather API providers for a cabin maintenance project, and it surfaced options I wouldn't have found on my own for hours.

Where it falls apart: code generation. Gemini writes code that looks right but behaves wrong in subtle ways that take longer to debug than writing it from scratch. For anything involving actual software engineering, I don't trust it as my primary tool.

Real-world value: Saves me roughly 3-5 hours per week on research tasks. At $0/month, that's infinite ROI.

Mistral (Free Tier — Le Chat)

Mistral's free chat interface is the most underrated AI tool in 2026, and I will die on this hill.

The French company doesn't get the hype that OpenAI and Anthropic get in the American tech press, but their models are fast, capable, and surprisingly good at technical content. Le Chat gives you access to their latest models with generous limits that I've never actually hit during normal usage.

I use Mistral for first drafts of technical explanations, for rubber-ducking architecture decisions, and for generating test data. It's particularly good at structured output — give it a schema and ask for sample data, and it'll produce something usable on the first try more often than not.

Real-world value: Replaced what I used to use ChatGPT's free tier for. Better quality, fewer restrictions, no guilt about hitting rate limits.

Claude Free Tier

Anthropic's free tier of Claude is limited but useful. You get a handful of conversations per day with their latest model, and honestly, for quick questions and short interactions, that's enough.

The limitation that actually matters: conversation length. Complex coding sessions or long document analysis will blow past the free tier's limits fast. But for "hey, explain this error message" or "review this 50-line function," the free tier does the job.

I keep Claude's free tier as my default "quick question" tool specifically because I don't want to burn paid credits on things that take thirty seconds.

Real-world value: Handles 60% of my quick AI interactions without costing anything.

Ollama + Open Source Models (Free, Self-Hosted)

This is the dark horse of the free tier, and it requires some technical chops to set up. Ollama lets you run open-source models locally — Llama, Mistral, CodeLlama, DeepSeek, and dozens of others.

I run a modest setup on my workstation: a machine with 32GB of RAM and an older NVIDIA GPU. It handles 7B and 13B parameter models comfortably. For offline work (which matters when your internet connection comes from a Starlink dish on a cabin roof in Alaska), local models are irreplaceable.

The quality isn't frontier-model level. But for code completion, log analysis, and basic content tasks, local models are free, private, and always available. I wrote a simple Node.js wrapper around Ollama's API that I use for batch processing tasks:

Real-world value: Essential for batch processing and offline work. Setup cost is time, not money.


Premium Tier: Worth Paying For Specific Use Cases

ChatGPT Plus ($20/month)

Here's my controversial take: ChatGPT Plus is the most overpaid AI subscription in the market, unless you use it for exactly the right things.

What it's good for: GPT-4o with vision is excellent for analyzing screenshots, diagrams, and photos. I use it to read handwritten notes, interpret dashboard screenshots, and process photos of physical documents. The image understanding is best-in-class.

What it's mediocre for: coding. I know, I know — every blog post tells you ChatGPT is amazing for coding. And it is, if your standard is "generates code that compiles." My standard is "generates code I'd actually ship," and by that standard, it's middling.

The browsing and data analysis features are nice but not essential. I can do the same things with a Python script and a free model.

When to pay: If you regularly need vision/image analysis capabilities or you use the ChatGPT ecosystem (custom GPTs, plugins). Otherwise, save your twenty bucks.

ROI estimate: For my use case (occasional image analysis, maybe 3-4 times per week), it saves me about 2 hours per week. At $20/month, that's roughly $2.50/hour of saved time. Marginal, but I keep it.

Midjourney ($10-30/month)

I use Midjourney for article header images and marketing visuals. Not because it's the best image generator — that's debatable — but because it has the most predictable aesthetic quality.

When I need a professional-looking header image for a technical article, Midjourney consistently produces something I can use without tweaking for twenty minutes. DALL-E gives me more creative results but less consistent quality. Stable Diffusion gives me more control but requires more effort.

At $10/month for the basic plan, the math works out. I publish enough content that I'd spend more than $10/month on stock photography, and stock photos look generic in a way that AI-generated images don't (yet).

When to pay: If you publish content regularly and need visuals. If you need one image per month, use a free generator.

ROI estimate: Replaces roughly $50-100/month in stock photography costs. Clear win.

Perplexity Pro ($20/month)

Perplexity is what Google search should have become. It gives you actual answers with citations instead of a page of blue links interspersed with ads.

The Pro version gives you access to more powerful models and longer research sessions. I use it for competitive analysis, market research, and fact-checking technical claims. When someone tells me "Kubernetes handles X automatically," I ask Perplexity to verify it and give me the source documentation.

The free version is decent. The Pro version is meaningfully better for complex, multi-step research queries.

When to pay: If research is a significant part of your work. If you're mostly writing code, skip it.

ROI estimate: Saves me 4-6 hours per week on research. At $20/month, that's under $1/hour. Solid value.


Must-Pay Tier: Tools That Pay for Themselves Immediately

Claude Pro / Claude Code ($20/month + API costs)

This is the tool I would pay triple for. I'm not saying this because I'm a fanboy — I'm saying this because I can point to specific projects where Claude directly generated revenue that dwarfed the subscription cost.

Claude Pro gives you extended conversations with the most capable model for complex reasoning and coding tasks. But the real value is Claude Code — the CLI tool that operates directly on your codebase.

I built an entire job board feature for Grizzly Peak Software in a weekend using Claude Code. The PostgreSQL schema, the Express routes, the Pug templates, the API integration with three different job feed providers, the AI-powered job classification system — all of it. That feature would have taken me two to three weeks working alone. Instead, it took two days.

Here's what makes Claude different from other coding assistants: it understands context. It reads your existing codebase, understands your patterns, and generates code that fits. When I work on my Express.js applications, Claude Code produces code that matches my style — var declarations, callback patterns, the specific middleware stack I use. It doesn't try to "modernize" my code into something unrecognizable.

The API costs for Claude Code vary, but for a heavy month I might spend $40-60 on top of the Pro subscription. For a light month, $10-15.

ROI estimate: Conservatively, Claude Code saves me 15-20 hours per week of development time. At the blended cost of roughly $80/month, that's $1/hour. That's not just good ROI — that's absurd ROI. It's the best money I spend on any tool, period.

Cursor ($20/month)

Cursor is an AI-powered code editor built on VS Code, and it changed how I think about IDE-level AI assistance.

The difference between Cursor and GitHub Copilot (which I also tried) is that Cursor understands your entire project, not just the current file. When I'm working on a route handler, Cursor's suggestions account for my database model, my middleware, and my template structure. Copilot gives me generic completions. Cursor gives me contextual completions.

I use Cursor for the rapid editing and inline generation. I use Claude Code for the heavy architectural work. Together, they cover the full spectrum of AI-assisted development.

The $20/month includes generous usage of Claude and GPT-4 models through the editor. For the volume I use, buying API access directly would cost more.

When to pay: If you write code professionally. Full stop. The productivity gain is immediate and measurable.

ROI estimate: Saves 5-8 hours per week. At $20/month, this is a no-brainer for any working developer.

GitHub Copilot for Business ($19/month)

I know I just said Cursor is better than Copilot. It is, for complex project-aware suggestions. But Copilot earns its place in the Must-Pay tier for one reason: inline completions while typing.

Copilot's tab-complete suggestions are so well-integrated into the typing flow that they feel like autocomplete on steroids. For boilerplate code, test files, configuration objects, and repetitive patterns, Copilot saves keystrokes by the thousands.

I don't use Copilot for thinking. I use it for typing. And at that job, it's unmatched.

ROI estimate: Hard to quantify precisely because the savings are distributed across hundreds of small moments per day. But I'd estimate 3-5 hours per week of cumulative time savings.


The Graveyard: Tools I Tried and Dropped

Not everything makes the tier list. Some things I paid for, used for a month, and canceled. A few dishonorable mentions:

Jasper AI ($49/month) — Marketing-focused AI writing tool. Produces aggressively mediocre content that reads like it was written by a committee. At $49/month, it's offensively overpriced for what amounts to a ChatGPT wrapper with templates.

Copy.ai ($36/month) — Same problem as Jasper. These "AI writing tools" that add a GUI on top of API calls and charge 2-3x the cost of direct access are a dying breed, and they deserve to be.

Tabnine ($12/month) — Code completion tool that was impressive in 2023 and is outclassed by everything else in 2026. If you're still using Tabnine, try literally anything else.

Notion AI ($8/month add-on) — Useful if you're already deep in the Notion ecosystem. I'm not. The AI features felt bolted on rather than integrated.


My Actual Monthly AI Budget

Let me be transparent about what I actually spend:

That's about $2,000 per year on AI tools. Is it worth it?

I built and launched three major features on my websites in the last six months. I publish technical content at a pace that would have been impossible without AI assistance. I run competitive analysis and market research in hours instead of days. And I maintain a full-time engineering job on top of all of it.

Could I do it cheaper? Absolutely. I could drop ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro, and I'd lose some convenience but survive. That would bring the cost down to about $130/month.

Could I do it for free? Not at this pace. The free tier tools are genuinely useful, but the speed and quality gap between free and paid is real when you're trying to ship production work.


The Real Lesson: Match the Tool to the Task

The biggest mistake I see developers make with AI tools is using premium tools for free-tier tasks. You don't need Claude Pro to explain a Python error message. You don't need GPT-4o to generate a SQL query. You don't need Cursor to write a bash script.

My workflow looks like this:

  1. Quick questions and lookups — Claude free tier or Gemini
  2. Research and fact-checking — Perplexity Pro or Gemini
  3. First drafts and brainstorming — Mistral (free) or Claude Pro
  4. Complex coding sessions — Claude Code (must-pay)
  5. Inline code editing — Cursor (must-pay)
  6. Tab-complete while typing — GitHub Copilot (must-pay)
  7. Image generation — Midjourney (premium)
  8. Image analysis — ChatGPT Plus (premium)
  9. Batch processing and offline — Ollama (free)

Every tool has its lane. The expensive mistake is paying for a Swiss Army knife when you need a screwdriver.


Looking Ahead: What Changes in Late 2026

The AI tool landscape is consolidating fast. By the end of 2026, I expect several things to happen:

The wrapper tools (Jasper, Copy.ai, and their ilk) will either pivot hard or die. The underlying models are too accessible and too cheap for middlemen to justify their margins.

Local models will get good enough to replace more paid services. The Llama and Mistral open-source models are improving at a pace that should worry every paid API provider.

Coding assistants will converge. The gap between Cursor, Copilot, and Claude Code will narrow as they all integrate similar capabilities. The winner will be determined by developer experience, not model quality.

And prices will come down. Competition is fierce, and the cost of inference is dropping. My $169/month budget will probably buy significantly more capability by December than it does today.

For now, though, this is what works. Build your own tier list based on what you actually do, not what Twitter tells you to pay for. The best AI tool is the one that saves you more time than it costs — and for most developers, that starts with the free tier and works up from there.
