The site owner had followed the programmatic SEO playbook perfectly — or at least the version of it that was popular in 2024. Identify a template. Generate thousands of variations with GPT-4. Publish them all at once. Watch the traffic climb. Celebrate on Twitter.
Then the March 2025 update hit, and Google did what Google always does to content it considers thin. It deindexed the vast majority of those pages and tanked the domain authority so hard that even the handful of legitimately good pages on the site stopped ranking.
I know this because I almost did the same thing. I was halfway through generating 10,000 pages of programmatic content for a project before I stopped and reconsidered. What saved me wasn't some brilliant insight. It was laziness. I couldn't bring myself to publish content I hadn't at least skimmed. And when I started skimming, I realized that about 70% of what the AI had generated was garbage that happened to be grammatically correct.
That realization led me to what I now call Programmatic SEO 2.0: use AI to generate the initial content, then apply human judgment to edit, curate, and elevate it. It's slower. It's more expensive. And it's the only approach I've seen survive multiple algorithm updates.
What Went Wrong with Programmatic SEO 1.0
The original promise of programmatic SEO was compelling. Find a keyword pattern with thousands of variations — "best [tool] for [use case]," "[city] [service] near me," "[technology] vs [technology]" — and generate a page for each variation. Each page targets a specific long-tail keyword. In aggregate, thousands of long-tail pages add up to significant traffic.
The approach worked brilliantly for a while. I know several people who built sites to five-figure monthly traffic using pure programmatic generation. The content was templated, formulaic, and often barely useful, but it ranked because Google's algorithms hadn't fully adapted to the volume of AI-generated content flooding the web.
The problems were predictable:
Content quality was uniformly mediocre. When you generate 5,000 pages from the same template, they all sound the same. The AI produces correct-sounding text that says nothing specific. "Python is a versatile programming language used by developers worldwide." True, useless, and identical in spirit to the 4,999 other pages on the site.
Internal competition killed individual pages. Five thousand pages about variations of the same topic don't help each other. They compete with each other. Google picks one to rank and buries the rest. Instead of 5,000 pages each getting a trickle of traffic, you get 50 pages with traffic and 4,950 pages that might as well not exist.
Algorithm updates targeted exactly this pattern. Google's helpful content updates, starting in late 2023 and continuing through 2025, were explicitly designed to identify and demote sites that exist primarily to capture search traffic rather than to help users. Pure programmatic SEO sites are the textbook example of what these updates target.
Reader trust evaporated. Users who landed on obviously AI-generated content bounced quickly. High bounce rates signaled to Google that the content wasn't satisfying user intent. This created a downward spiral: thin content led to bounces, bounces led to ranking drops, ranking drops led to less traffic, less traffic meant fewer signals to prove the content had any value.
The 2.0 Approach: AI Draft, Human Edit
The strategy I've settled on for Grizzly Peak Software is fundamentally different from the generate-and-publish approach. It treats AI as a first draft writer, not a publisher.
Here's the actual workflow:
Step 1: Identify content opportunities programmatically. This part is the same as traditional programmatic SEO. I use keyword research tools and search console data to find patterns where multiple related queries exist. The difference is that I'm looking for dozens of opportunities, not thousands.

Step 2: Generate first drafts with AI. I use Claude to generate initial drafts for each identified topic. The prompt is specific and includes context about the target audience, the specific angle I want, and examples of the writing style I'm going for.
The critical difference from 1.0: I generate one article at a time, not in bulk batches. Each prompt is customized. Each draft gets individual attention. This immediately eliminates the uniformity problem.
Step 3: Human editing pass. This is where 2.0 diverges completely from 1.0. Every AI-generated draft gets a human editing pass. Not a skim. Not a spell-check. A genuine edit where I:
- Remove generic filler sentences
- Add specific examples from my own experience
- Insert opinions and judgments the AI wouldn't make
- Verify any technical claims
- Add code examples I've actually tested
- Restructure sections that feel templated
This editing pass typically takes 30-60 minutes per article. It's the most time-consuming step, and it's the step that makes the strategy work.
Step 4: Add unique value. After the edit, I add something to each article that couldn't have been generated: a personal anecdote, a specific data point from my own experience, a tested code example from a real project. This unique value is what separates the article from anything else on the internet.
Step 5: Publish on a human schedule. Not all at once. Not 50 articles in a day. A few per week, at most. This mimics the natural publishing cadence of a real blog and avoids triggering Google's bulk-publish detection.
Why the Human Edit Is Non-Negotiable
I've tested this. I published some articles with minimal editing and some with thorough editing, and tracked the results over six months. The data is unambiguous.
Articles with thorough human editing:

- Average bounce rate: 34%
- Average position after 90 days: 8.2

The lightly-edited articles were getting indexed and ranking initially, but they degraded over time. By month six, most had dropped out of the top 50 entirely. The thoroughly-edited articles held their positions or improved.
The reason is straightforward: Google's algorithms are increasingly good at measuring user satisfaction signals. Time on page, scroll depth, bounce rate, return visits — these are all proxies for "did this content actually help the user?" Lightly-edited AI content fails these tests because it's verbose without being useful. It says a lot without saying anything.
Human editing fixes this by cutting the filler and adding substance. A 3,000-word AI draft becomes a 2,200-word edited article that says more with fewer words. Readers can feel the difference even if they can't articulate it.
The Economics of Programmatic SEO 2.0
The obvious objection: this doesn't scale like 1.0. If every article needs 30-60 minutes of human editing, you can't publish 10,000 pages. You can maybe publish 200-500 over the course of a year.
That's true, and it's actually the point.
The math on 1.0 was: 10,000 pages * 0.5 visits/day * $0.01 RPM = $50/day. Sounds fine until 9,000 of those pages get deindexed and your daily revenue drops to $5.
The math on 2.0 is: 300 pages * 15 visits/day * $0.05 RPM = $225/day. The per-page traffic is higher because the content is better. The RPM is higher because engaged readers click on ads and affiliate links at higher rates. And the traffic is durable because the content survives algorithm updates.

The 2.0 numbers are obviously illustrative, not a guarantee. But the directional argument is solid: fewer pages with better content and higher engagement outperform many pages with thin content and poor engagement, especially after algorithm updates cull the weak pages.
What AI Is Actually Good At in This Workflow
AI-generated first drafts aren't worthless. They're genuinely useful for several specific things:
Structure and outline. AI is excellent at organizing a topic into a logical structure with appropriate headers and section flow. I almost never restructure the overall outline of an AI draft. The macro structure is usually right.
Covering known territory. For established topics where the facts are well-documented, AI produces accurate, comprehensive summaries. If I need to explain how HTTP caching works or what the differences between REST and GraphQL are, the AI draft is usually 90% correct on the factual content.
Identifying subtopics. AI frequently includes subtopics I wouldn't have thought to cover. It pulls from a broader knowledge base than any individual writer and surfaces relevant connections I might miss.
Consistency of format. When you're producing hundreds of articles, maintaining consistent formatting, header structure, and content organization is tedious. AI handles this effortlessly.
What AI is bad at:
Opinions. AI hedges everything. "Some developers prefer X, while others prefer Y." Real articles need to take a position. "X is better for this use case, and here's why." The editing pass is where opinions get added.
Specific experience. AI can't tell you about the time a specific deployment failed at 2 AM or the exact error message you spent three hours debugging. These specifics are what make content feel written by a real person.
Judgment about what to exclude. AI includes everything. A 3,000-word draft about API rate limiting will cover every edge case and consideration. The human editor's job is to cut the 800 words that don't serve the reader and tighten the 2,200 words that do.
Detecting its own errors. AI confidently states incorrect things. Without a human verification pass, technical errors get published and erode reader trust. I've caught AI claiming that Node.js is multi-threaded, that MongoDB supports ACID transactions by default, and that Python's GIL was removed in version 3.12. All plausible-sounding, all wrong.
The Editing Checklist I Actually Use
After a year of refining the process, I've settled on a specific editing checklist for every AI-generated draft:
Delete the first paragraph. AI-generated intros are almost always generic throat-clearing. I replace them with a specific hook — an anecdote, a surprising statistic, or a direct claim.
Search for "it's important to note" and similar filler. Delete all of them. If it were actually important, you wouldn't need to tell the reader it's important.
Find every hedging phrase and either commit or cut. "Can be useful," "might help," "could potentially" — replace with definitive statements or remove entirely.
Verify every technical claim. Run every code example. Check every version number. Confirm every API endpoint. This takes the most time and catches the most errors.
Add at least one personal experience per major section. The reader came here for expert perspective, not for a Wikipedia summary. Every section needs something only I could have written.
Cut 20-30% of the word count. AI drafts are almost always too long. Cutting forces you to keep only the most valuable content.
Read the conclusion. If it sounds like a high school essay ("In conclusion, programmatic SEO is an important topic…"), rewrite it entirely.
This checklist is not glamorous. It takes real time. But it's the difference between content that ranks for a month and content that ranks for years.
The Long-Term Play
Programmatic SEO 2.0 is slower than 1.0. It produces fewer pages. It costs more per page in human editing time. And it is unambiguously the better strategy for anyone who wants to build something durable.
I've been running this approach on Grizzly Peak Software for over a year now. The content I published with thorough human editing in early 2025 is still ranking. Some of it has actually improved its position over time as competing thin content got cleared out by algorithm updates. The pages that survive are the ones with genuine substance, real code examples, and authentic perspective.
Google's trajectory is clear: every algorithm update makes it harder for thin content to rank and easier for substantive content to hold its position. The sites that will thrive in 2026 and beyond are the ones that used AI as a tool for efficiency, not as a replacement for expertise.
The 1.0 approach treated AI as a printing press — crank out volume and hope some of it sticks. The 2.0 approach treats AI as a research assistant — it does the initial legwork so you can focus your human effort on the parts that actually matter.
I'd rather have 300 articles that each bring in 15 visitors a day than 10,000 articles that each bring in zero after the next algorithm update. The math is better. The stress is lower. And I can actually stand behind everything on the site with my name on it.
That last part matters more than most people realize. When your name is on the content, your reputation is tied to its quality. AI can help you produce it faster. But only you can make it worth reading.
